Head of HPC/AI Cluster (m/f/d, E14 TV-L, 100%, permanent)
The Tübingen AI Center aims to foster a world-class research ecosystem in the field of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. It is one of five competence centers funded by Germany's Ministry of Education and Research and collaborates closely with the first institute of the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS). It is part of the major Cyber Valley initiative, where many partners in academia and industry have joined forces to work on breakthroughs in artificial intelligence. The Tübingen AI Center is a joint institute between the University of Tübingen and the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems. At its core is the ML Cloud, a state-of-the-art compute infrastructure with CPU and GPU compute capacities, petabyte-scale storage volumes, and peak performance of up to 15.8 Pflop/s used by more than 500 researchers and engineers. Our ground-breaking research fuels advancements in foundation models, computer vision, health applications, VR/AR technologies, fairness, Open Source development and much more worldwide. Your Role
As Head of HPC/AI Cluster, you will lead and expand our HPC team, overseeing design, maintenance, installation, and future upgrades. You'll collaborate with researchers, engineers, and suppliers to ensure a world-class AI computing environment.
Key responsibilities
- Lead, hire, and develop a high-performing HPC/AI cluster team.
- Oversee and advance our AI-focused HPC and cloud infrastructure.
- Ensure reliability, scalability, and high availability of computing resources.
- Collaborate with internal teams, university IT services, and external suppliers.
- Design tenders for cutting-edge AI hardware expansions.
- Support and train users while staying updated on HPC technologies.
Your Profile
- Master’s degree in IT, Computer Science, or related fields.
- Experience in Management and operation of compute facilities
- Expertise in high-performance computing and cloud infrastructure.
- Proven leadership in technical teams and ability to build strong relationships.
- Strong English (and German) communication skills.
- Expertise in Linux administration, networking, storage clusters, ML infrastructure, and GPU computing.
- Hands-on experience with machine learning.
